Message from the Director

 It has been an honour to lead a dynamic department and it is my pleasure to present our School’s annual report, which highlights and documents many of the wonderful events and accomplishments of our staff and students. 

About the school

The School of Mathematics at the University of Nairobi is responsible within the University for the development of the Mathematical Sciences. It has an excellent research reputation, a strong, demanding program of graduate study in Pure Mathematics, Applied & Industrial Mathematics, Statistics & Operations Research and Actuarial Science & Financial Mathematics; and a full range of excellent undergraduate course oerings. The School has approximately 48 academic staff with research interests in virtually every area of Mathematics, committed to conducting high quality relevant research, training and consultancy; and continuously produces holistic graduates who meet the needs of the market. The School takes pride as the current overall coordinating centre for Eastern Africa Universities Mathematics Programme(EAUMP) and on its linkages with International Science Programme(ISP), International Mathematical Union (IMU), International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées(CIMPA), Mathematics Association of Kenya (MAK), Actuarial Society of South Africa(ASSA), The Actuarial Society of Kenya(TASK), International Biometric Society, among other organisations. 

School structure

 The School is structured into academic divisions for the purposes of organising and coordinating teaching and research throughout the university. The actual organisation of the teaching and research is the duty of the Heads of the individual Divisions. The School is headed by a Director who is assisted by Heads of Divisions. 


 In the last year our School has enjoyed recognition by numerous awards to our faculty. Prof. Wandera OGANA became the first African to be elected the President of the Commission for Developing Countries (CDC)-a Commission of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), Prof. Patrick WEKE was appointed a member of Barclays Africa Chair for Actuarial Science at the University of Pretoria, Dr. Philip NGARE obtained grants for his research visit of Department of Mathematics, Technical University of Kaiserslautern and Technical University of Berlin, Germany. Dr. Nelson OWUOR received funds to Annual Report 2014-2015 vii and the Mathematical and Computational Epidemiology of Infectious diseases Workshop, Erice Italy, from 30th August -5th September 2015, Dr. Ivivi MWANIKI and Dr. Jared ONGARO have both secured the International Science Programme (ISP) funding.for postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Cape Town and University of Oxford respectively. Dr. Josephine KAGU won the Simons Foundation Travel grant, and she will be visiting Colorado State University in the coming year.

Staff promotions

We are also happy to report that the University promoted 14 members of the School to various academic ranks (namely 3 Professors, 5 Senior Lecturers, 5 Lecturers and 1Tutorial Fellow) during the year.We  graduated a total of 3 Ph.D., 42 MSc. and 129 BSc. candidates.

Programs introduced and revision

The School is proud to report that all the undergraduate programmes (namely, B.Sc.in Actuarial Science, B.Sc. in Mathematics, and B.Sc. in Statistics) were successfully reviewed and introduced the B.Sc. in Mathematics and Computing as a new programme. The review of these programmes took into account local and international trends in university education, industry interest and stakeholder/professional associations input. 

 We hope that you are excited about our School and our promise to doing more in the coming academic year. We greatly appreciate your feedback and your involvement as it helps in accomplishing our mission of excellence in research and education.
