Mr.Steve Obuogo Education Development Officer at ACCA speaking to School of Mathematics students during a career talk session

ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) staff members held a career talk with the students from the school of Mathematics. The talk was organized by M.A.N.U(Mathematics Association of Nairobi University, ACCA and the School of Mathematics.  The ACCA was team led by the Education Development Manager Mr. Geoffrey Ochieng, The talk had a series of topics on professionalism, personal branding, soft skills, career choices, and type of interviews.

Mr. Steve Obuogo Education Development Officer at ACCA spoke to the students about being responsible and having a direction in life, the values of hard work, being in good relationships, having an identity and being different, sacrificing and being passionate, thinking ahead. He also spoke to the students about the things to avoid if they aspired to successful in life. The attributes included bad company, laziness, bad crowd, complacency, entitlement, non-reading culture, stagnation and lastly attitude. He emphasized on Attitude likening it to a flat tire “bad attitude is like a flat tyre you can’t go anywhere until you change it”.

Mr. Geoffrey Ochieng, ACCA Education Development Manager also an Alumni of the School of Mathematics (B.Sc (Mathematics and Chemistry) talked to the students about “what next after B.Sc”.  He emphasized to the students on being focused, staying focused and reading books as this will empower them to be anything they desire. He also said that professional papers like the ACCA are like global passports. A first degree is the beginning to possibilities when combined with professional certificates an individual becomes successful. Giving an example of himself. Mr. Ochieng, pursued Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Mathematics and Chemistry from the school of mathematics university of Nairobi. He went further and did professional papers including ACCA, currently he is the education development manager at ACCA.

Dr Hudson Were MANU patron and senior lecturer in the School of Mathematics thanked the ACCA team for creating time to talk to students. He particularly singled out Mr. Ochieng  for being an exemplary student and a proof that mathematics can be applied in any field.
