PROFESSOR OGANA ELECTED THE FIRST AFRICAN PRESIDENT TO HEAD IMU COMMISSION

Professor Wandera Ogana, was elected the President of the Commission for Developing Countries (CDC), a commission of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), for the period 2015 – 2018. The election took place at the General Assembly of the IMU, held from August 10 to 11, 2014, in Gyengju, Korea. Prof. Ogana becomes the first African to hold this position. Since 2011, he has been the African Member at the CDC, whose mandate is to manage all IMU initiatives in support of mathematics in the developing world. He will now be replaced by Professor Mama Foupouagnigni, the Academic Director at AIMS-Cameroon, who was elected the new African Member in the CDC for the period 2015 – 2018.

Prof. Wandera Ogana, is a full professor of applied mathematics at the School of Mathematics.He is a graduate of the University of East Africa (University College Nairobi).  He obtained his M.Sc and Ph.D, in Applied Mechanics, from Stanford University (USA). Before joining the University of Nairobi, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the NASA Ames Research Centre (Mountain View, California, USA).  His main area of research interest is computational fluid dynamics, involving application of boundary element methods to solve transonic flow problems.  He has also undertaken mathematical modeling in diverse areas such as ecology, wind energy assessment and the impact of climate change on infectious diseases.  In addition to his mathematical and scientific contributions, he has written several novels and a collection of short stories.

 
He is a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), a Fellow and past Honorary Secretary of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) and Vice-President (East Africa) of the African Mathematical Union (AMU).  He is also the Programme Director of the African Mathematics Millennium Science Initiative (AMMSI), a distributed network of mathematics research, training and promotion in Africa.
