The President, Institute and Faculty of Actuaries on “DIVERSITY”

The President, Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFOA), Mr. Nick Salter challenged students to diversify their careers from the norm.Mr Salter was speaking to Actuarial Students from various universities. The talk whose theme was “DIVERSITY” was organized by the school of Mathematics in conjunction with the Actuarial Society of Kenya (TASK).According to Mr. Salter, the main advantage of diversity is the efficiency it creates at the work place. Salter noted that companies with employees from different professional backgrounds work better and achieve more compared to those with employees from the same background.

Mr Salter became the president in June 2014 , taking over from David Hare. Having  graduated from Cambridge University in 1978 with an Economics degree and qualified as an actuary in 1986. In 1989  he a  founding partner  of Barnett Waddingham LLP and is now senior partner, specialising in advising trustees and companies on pensions. He is also on the Court of the Worshipful Company of Actuaries and chairs its Finance Committee.

Away from work, Nick tries to keep fit through his cycling, skiing and tennis and, although he would prefer to play, he enjoys watching most sports but especially cricket and rugby.

During his visit to the university Mr. Salter met the University Management Prof. Isaac Mbeche, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Mutoro, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs,Prof. Bernard Aduda, the Principal, College of Biological and Physical Sciences, Prof. Patrick Weke, Director, School of Mathematics. Mr. Salter was accompanied by IFOA’s Director of Education, Dr. Trevor Watkins and Mr. Moses Mutuli from the Actuarial Society of Kenya.
