Philosophy of the Programme
The philosophy of the programme is to foster excellence in academic freedom, professionalism and integrity through quality scholarly teaching, training and research .
The rationale of the Programme
The rationale of the degree program is to equip the mathematically competent students with a advanced focus for research in mathematics and its applications. This course is designed to provide students with a broad training in mathematics useful in analysis and solution of problems in mathematical sciences. The programme is also ideally suited for students who want to pursue research towards a doctoral degree in mathematics and related areas. The PHD in Mathematics program has been reviewed in line with the Commission for University Education (CUE) guidelines and also to take into account recent changes in advanced mathematics training worldwide.

- Provide students with advanced training in Pure Mathematics
- Expose the student to Current research trends in pure Mathematics

Structure
Registration is governed by the common regulation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the school of Mathematics.
supervised thesis research in a chosen area of study for a minimum period of six (6) semesters,
quarterly progress reports to Graduate School to confirm the progress of research work.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the University's general admission criteria for Doctor of Philosophy Degree programmes.
The following shall be eligible for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy
Holders of first degree in or its equivalent from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by Senate
Holders Master’s degree in or its equivalent from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by Senate

The Doctor of Philosophy degree shall be carried out by research as recommended by the Department of Mathematics Board and the Board of Postgraduate Studies and approved by Senate.
