Erastus Kimani Ndekele presented his PhD proposal on: Initial Surplus for Captive Insurers based on Classical Risk Models to the School of Mathematics academic board. The boards mandate is to ensure that the candidate’s proposals are in line with the approved University guidelines on the awarding of Doctor of Philosophy Degrees. Mr Ndekele graduated from the School of Mathematics in 2015 with master’s degree in Actuarial science. His thesis during his master’s studies was on: Determination of Minimum Initial Capital Using the Cramer-Lundberg Model and Discrete Time Bisection Ruin.

The livelihoods of the rural poor are nested within ecological communities. The poor rely heavily on their immediate natural environment for subsistence and suffer high morbidity and mortality due to infectious diseases. We show how the dynamics of poverty can be modeled, focusing on four exemplar drivers: infectious diseases, renewable resources, land - use change and population growth.
