The School of Mathematics and the Mathematics Association of Nairobi University (MANU) organized its first varsity contest dubbed “MANU Varsity Mathematical Olympiad” The contest being a first of its kind in the school attracted 21 contestants. The contestants were drawn from School of Mathematics, School of Physical sciences, School of Engineering and School of Economics.
Mathematics Association of Nairobi University (MANU) is a student organization in the school of Mathematics. Whose vision is to Develop and integrate mathematics into the corporate world. MANU has been instrumental in promoting mathematics through Mathematics Olympiad events such as Pan African Mathematics Olympiads (PAMO) and The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
Ben Tito Kyalo a second-year student from the School of Engineering emerged the best after scoring 35 points out of possible points of 60. Mumo Sammy also a second-year student from the School of Economics emerged the second while Kisenga Titus Muimi of School of Mathematics emerged position three. School of Mathematics had the most number of participants at fifteen.
The Contest consisted of two categories of events, The first event was Individual work where participants were given 2 hours to complete the questions. The second event was group work participants were allowed to sit in groups of 4 and solve questions.
This year’s contest was a pilot as the event will be held annually and at a national level where all Universities and colleges will participate.
The Varsity contest aims at Promoting academic excellence where students can think and solve complex mathematical problems also the contest aims at building and nurturing a network of students passionate about mathematics.
