Departments of Mathematics, University of Nairobi, launched a Master of Science in Data Science with a track in Public Health Data Science program. The program was launched as a Master of Science in Data Science with a track in Public Health Data Science at the University of Nairobi. The program, dubbed APHREA-DST, is a partnership between Columbia University (USA), Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), and the University of Nairobi (Kenya). APHREA-DST is supported by the NIH Common Fund and is part of "Harnessing Data Science for Health Discovery and Innovation in Africa," known as the DS-I Africa.
The program aims to equip learners with the knowledge, tools, and techniques, skills, and competence required for critical thinking, problem analysis, problem-solving, and the innovativeness required for decision-making based on data. These data scientists should gain practical, hands-on experience with statistics programming languages and big data tools through coursework and applied research experiences while developing an in-depth understanding of the key technologies in data science and business analytics.
Speaking during the launch of the ceremony, Professor Luketero, chairman of the department of mathematics, welcomed the students to the University of Nairobi. He also challenged the students to fully grasp the knowledge at hand so that they could help in coming up with solutions to the current world problems.
Faculty of Science Dean Prof. Leonidda Kerubo officially launched the program. As the chief guest, she thanked APHREA-DST for the partnership. The dean advised the students to always abide by the university students' code of conduct and to always communicate with her office on any issues. She wished them a successful learning experience.
Other speakers and distinguished guests included faculty of Science and Technology Associate Dean Prof. Francis Mulla, Chairman Department of Computing. Dr Andrew Kahonge. and APHREA-DST Principal Investigator Prof. Parick Weke, Thematic Head Data Science Department of Mathematics Dr. Jared Ongaro
Classes are set to kick off in January 2023.
