UON APHREA-DST Official Launch

APHREA-DST Project was officially launched on the April 4, 2022 at the University of Nairobi’s Towers Room MLT 404. present at the launch were  the  projects principal Investigators , Program director and the university of Nairobi administration Staff and students.

APHREA-DST stands for Advancing Public Health Research in Eastern Africa through Data Science Training.APHREA-DST,  is supported by the U.S.National Institutes of Health (NIH) Common Fund and is part of the“Harnessing Data Science for Health Discovery and Innovation in Africa” program. APHREA-DST aims to advance public health research in Eastern Africa by establishing new multi-tiered training programs in health data science, with initial focus on Ethiopia and Kenya. APHREA-DST is a partnership between Columbia University (CU, USA), Addis Ababa University (AAU, Ethiopia) and University of Nairobi (UoN, Kenya). At UoN, partnering institutions include the department of Mathematics, the department of Public Health, and the department of Computing and Informatics.

APHREA-DST project goals include the development of sustainable M.Sc. programs in Public Health Data Science at University of Nairobi and Addis Ababa University, faculty mentoring programs, research immersion opportunities, and short-term training programs for a wide spectrum of trainees from governmental and non-governmental stakeholders and the private sector. The project is partnered with ongoing research projects in the areas of environmental health, exposure assessment, remote satellite data, occupational exposures, climate change, infectious diseases, health surveillance, and health system monitoring and evaluation, allowing APHREA-DST to provide hands-on research experience for trainees.
