Virtual Alumni Meet-up

On March 9th, 2023, the Mathematics Association of Nairobi University (M.A.N.U) hosted a virtual alumni meet-up with students. The event's purpose was to provide a chance for alumni to share their post-campus career paths and advise students.  

The event was held on Google Meet. Despite the virtual format, the event was a great success, with many alumni and students in attendance. 

The event featured several keynote speakers who shared their experiences and insights about their career paths in mathematics, actuarial science, and Statistics. 

The first speaker, Mr Anaklet Koros Head of Risk (ERM) - Kenya at AIG, talked about his journey from the University of Nairobi to a successful career in banking and risk management. He emphasized the importance of developing strong analytical skills and being adaptable in a constantly changing field. 

The second speaker, Mr Cyrus Wakonyo a Senior Actuarial Analyst at jubilee life insurance company limited-Kenya discussed the importance of getting more skills after the 1st degree. He shared insights about the job market and encouraged students to always make use of time and never to limit themselves to what is taught in class. He finished his speech by reminding students that “the industry is large and it needs skill” 

The Third speaker, Ms May Peters a Consultant Liaison Financial Services at Liaison Group (I.B) Ltd, talked about her career in banking and how moving with market trends is important. She also reminded students to make use of free courses provided on the internet. She closed her speech by encouraging students to be keen and passionate about what they are doing. 

The next speaker Ms Jackline Chemtai Kapsukut a fellow at ILO's Social Finance Programme spoke about her career journey and recommended that students always take the highest possible risks and explore opportunities. See also discussed the importance of networking and building relationships in the industry. She closed by encouraging students to the importance of having a mentor. 

The final speaker, Mr Dan Kilemi a Statistician at The Consulting House, reminded students that they have an upper hand compared to the rest because of their background in mathematics. Having a data analysis skill set will be an added advantage. He closed by recommending that the students be flexible and adaptable and always be ready to share knowledge with others. 

Mr Anaklet who chaired the event closed by reminding the students that the skills that they get should always be visible. And that they should always reach out to relevant professionals communities  

 The event concluded with a closing speech from the MANU chairperson Mr Mathew Musili, thanking everyone for their participation. Overall, the virtual alumni meet-up was a valuable experience for the students. It provided an opportunity for alumni to give back to their alma mater and share their knowledge and experience with the next generation.  

We hope that this event will inspire more such events, as it will provide a valuable opportunity for alumni and students to connect and learn from each other.
