Kenya to partcipate in the 60th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad

Location / Venue:

Bath, United Kingdom.

contestants during the two-week residential training camp organized by the School

Kenya will be represented in the upcoming 60th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad to be held in Bath, United Kingdom.

The competition involves teams of up to six contestants sitting two exams on consecutive days. Each exam lasts 4.5 hours and contains three hard problems.  Contestants’ scripts are marked over the next few days with each solution (or attempt) being awarded a score out of seven.

The six students representing Kenya were chosen after a rigorous Mathematics competition known as. The Kenya Mathematical Olympiad.

The Kenya Mathematical Olympiad is an annual high school mathematics contest with the aim of selecting the Kenyan teams for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and the Pan African Mathematical Olympiad (PAMO). It is organized by the School of Mathematics, University of Nairobi and has been running since 2009.

This year we run the 9thKenya Mathematical Olympiad to select the Kenyan teams for PAMO 2019 and IMO 2019. The third and final round was held on the 16th of February, 2019 at the University of Nairobi.

The Kenya mathematical Olympiad has the Junior section (form 1 and 2) and the senior section (form 3 and 4) in the first round. A minimum of 50 top students in the Junior category and a minimum of 150 students in the Senior Category are invited for the second round.

The top 25 in the second round are invited for the third and final round. The top 3 boys and top 3 girls make the PAMO team. The top 6 contestants make the IMO team All participants receive a certificate of participation for each round and the top performers in round 2 and 3 are awarded medals and certificates of merit.

The selected team members attend a two-week residential training camp conducted by lecturers from the school of mathematics, University of Nairobi.

IMO is a unique event that brings together the brightest young minds from around the world and represents, for them, the culmination of many years of mathematical endeavour and hundreds of attempts at solving problems. Our aim is to provide contestants with a comfortable environment so that they will be able to give of their best in the exams. We also want all participants to have opportunities to enjoy the company of like-minded young people from around the world and make memories and friendships that will last a lifetime

Why students should participate in Olympiads

  • Sharpen mathematical and problem-solving skills/aptitude with a wide application as well as improve performance in the national exams
  • Strengthen CVs for scholarships to ivy league and elite universities and job applications
  • Build a network of future colleagues, business partners and co-researchers in Africa and globally.
  • Leads to wonderful careers such as data scientists, engineers, finance, information sciences and many more.
  • The future is bright for STEM linked jobs and especially in the IT services industry.

This year The Kenya mathematical Olympiad held its first Kenya Primary Mathematical Olympiad on the 21stof February 2019 at Alliance Girls High School. This will help in early identification of talent and build momentum for the high school Olympiad.
